Upcycling, or reusing discarded objects to create a higher quality or more valuable end product, is the new environmentally friendly approach to home renovations and can take many forms, such as salvaging reclaimed wood, repurposing antique appliances, using old windows to make a greenhouse, or repurposing old timber for a mantel.
A growing trend in home renovations is utilizing reclaimed wood as an accent piece or wall, piece of furniture, or decor statement. Before you decide to use reclaimed wood in your next home improvement project, compare the pros and cons of using reclaimed wood to determine if utilizing this sustainable and unique resource is right for you or not.
What is reclaimed wood
Reclaimed wood is any wood that has been previously used for other purposes but is no longer usable or needed. It's then deconstructed and repurposed for another project. Sources of reclaimed wood can include barns, homes, ships, boxcars, pallets, railroad ties, bowling alleys, or any other wood structures. New uses for the wood might include flooring, walls, countertops, desks, tables, swings, accent walls or finishes, or any other wood structures.
Pros of using reclaimed wood
Reclaimed wood has a worn, almost rugged look that offers something freshly milled lumber just isn't capable of achieving. Every piece is unique, with different cuts, knobs, nail holes, and weathering in each board. Solid wood is a classic and timeless feature that fits with any decor.
There is a sense of history and story behind the wood, which can be very appealing to some homeowners. It could be salvaged from a sailboat that got damaged in a hurricane or from an old barn that was hand-hewn hundreds of years ago. It's certainly something different to talk about when you have guests over for dinner and can offer character to the property.
Most reclaimed wood has already gone through the drying stage and is well cured, making it very strong, with no chance of warping. Much of it was harvested from old-growth forests instead of the young trees harvested in today's times, making the wood itself stronger on that basis alone.
Reclaimed wood really stands out from the environmentally friendly standpoint. Instead of further deforesting the land and disrupting ecosystems, using reclaimed wood allows you to save trees and fossil fuels simply by revitalizing what has already been harvested. Homeowners and homebuilders can even get LEED certification for reusing materials in renovations.
Cons of using reclaimed wood
Reclaimed wood, although sustainable, is still a finite resource. With high consumer demand, there have been counterfeit products -- newly cut low-grade timber -- sold as salvage. A Forest Stewardship Council or Rainforest Alliance certification ensures that your dealer is actually selling you authentic reclaimed wood.
In that same vein, high demand typically means high prices. Reclaimed wood can be expensive if you're purchasing through a dealer, which is how most homeowners will likely source their materials. On the flip side, if you're willing to deconstruct yourself and find an owner who's looking to get rid of the structure, you could potentially get it for free.
The character and uniqueness of each salvaged board can also be a negative aspect in its own right. Reclaimed wood boards are typically not standard cuts and can vary greatly in size or shape, which can make construction difficult even for experienced contractors. If you intend on preserving the character, things like knots in the wood or previous damage can make fitting it all together a challenge.
One of the biggest reservations many have about using reclaimed wood is the potential pest issues. If it isn't treated at all, you could wind up with an insect infestation in your home. If it's been treated with anything other than kiln drying, there are likely toxicity issues you could be bringing into your home.
In summary
There are pros as well as cons when using reclaimed wood on your next home-improvement project. If researched and authenticated, many of the negatives can easily be mitigated, although it's still likely to be a costly and time-consuming process. Reclaimed wood has a distinctive character that's hard to beat and can be used for floors, counters, walls, and just about anywhere. The decision is ultimately yours. Make sure to do your research and find a reputable dealer to work with, which will take much of the uncertainty out of the process.
This is the fourth in a series of five articles that help you find ways to reduce your carbon footprint. We consider the main carbon culprits in the average American's lifestyle.
When Americans overcompensated for the shortages during World War II in a burst of post-war spending, an appliance-filled kitchen became a worldwide aspirational symbol of American wealth and consumer culture. Appliances are still major purchases that use a lot of household electricity, and as a result, they are a significant source of Americans' carbon emissions.
Today, those appliances are considered necessities rather than luxury goods. And thanks to pandemic panic, Americans are buying more appliances than ever. If you are considering a new appliance, take a few steps to choose wisely for the planet and your family.
Carbon Footprints
The amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by a particular activity is known as its carbon footprint. Carbon dioxide emissions are a leading cause of climate change. So carbon footprints can serve as a useful shorthand for environmental impact.
There are many ways to calculate your family's overall carbon footprint, which can be higher or lower depending on the number of people in your household, the size of your house, how much and how you travel, and myriad other decisions you make throughout the year. On average, each American generates 18.55 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. This is 3.5 times the global average of 5.3 tons.
Transportation is the largest component of most household's carbon footprint, followed by the stuff people buy. After that, people's homes contribute the most carbon to the atmosphere: 17 percent through heating and cooling and 15 percent produced by the energy used by everything else in the home.
That 15 percent powers our appliances and electronics, and it is an area where we have lots of room for improvement.
Good
It's always good to start with the easiest changes. Most people have already made the switch from incandescent to compact fluorescent light bulbs. Switching to LED light bulbs is just as easy, but more effective.
How you use your appliances can make them more efficient. Turn off the lights – and the TV – when you leave the room. Unplug electronics when you are not using them, too. Vampire power, the energy an appliance uses when it's turned off, adds up. Do you really need the TV to be powered all day long? It's not like the clock was set to the right time anyway.
There are lots of ways to make your refrigerator more efficient, from how you fill it to where you place it. Laundry hacks include running full loads of laundry with cold water and even using tennis balls in the dryer. Turn down your water heater and install low-flow faucets to heat less water.
Smart technologies and some small appliances can help you make your home less wasteful. But most of us have bought appliances we didn't really need. Save money and resources by resisting the urge to buy unnecessary appliances. Will that bread machine, seltzer maker, or electric toothbrush truly make your life easier? Or does it just increase your electricity consumption? Ask yourself these questions when the Best Buy salesperson pitches you on the latest technology.
Better
Start your path to doing better by redefining your ideas about what is "necessary." In Europe and Asia, clothes dryers are considered superfluous. Find eco-friendly ways – like canning and gardening – to boost your food security without putting an extra freezer in your garage. But don't get carried away – a modern, energy-efficient dishwasher can use less water and even less energy from heating water than handwashing dishes.
Buy the most efficient models of whatever you do need. Instead of coffee pods, use a regular coffee maker; instead of a regular coffee maker, consider a French press. Don't forget the energy your electronics use, too. Laptops use less energy than desktop computers, and there are now Energy Star models of most tech devices. There are no truly sustainable electronics yet, but when shopping for routers, smartphones, and stealth electronics, don't forget to consider efficiency and recyclability.
Although new appliances are more efficient than your old ones, manufacturing also generates a lot of carbon dioxides, so before you buy, make sure the efficiencies justify the upgrade.
Best
Even the best among us are unlikely to eschew technology altogether, but if you are willing to make some lifestyle adjustments, switch to low-tech home appliances like foot-powered washing machines, solar cookers, and hand-cranked kitchen tools.
Solar water heating systems are an investment but can slash your home energy use.
For the energy your home still uses, signing up for green energy and purchasing carbon offsets will reduce the impact of the electric power you pull from the grid. And if you're willing to make really big changes, you can achieve net-zero energy use at home by generating your own solar power.
DeWitt, N.Y. — While tidying up her home in anticipation of photographers coming around to shoot it before it went on the market, Diana Brownlie could not help but feel nostalgic.
"What a nifty house," she said to herself when she was finished.
Her home at 121 Manor Drive in DeWitt, near Le Moyne College, is also a unique part of American housing history.
There was a huge demand for new and affordable housing in the United States when American soldiers began coming home at the end of World War II. The demand created a housing shortage.
The Lustron Corporation of Columbus, Ohio, attempted to fill the void with what it called "the house America had been waiting for."
The Lustron was made from porcelain-enameled steel panels, that could be delivered to properties across the country and constructed in just a few days.
The all-metal construction was virtually maintenance free, needed no painting or wallpapering, and featured an open floor plan with built-in appliances and cabinetry.
Their price, size and convenience made them perfect for returning soldiers.
The homes were said to be able to "defy weather, wear, and time."
Diana Brownlie's two-bedroom yellow Lustron, constructed in 1946, is one of just roughly 2,500 which were built before the company declared bankruptcy in 1950.
She admitted she had never heard of them before she came across her future home in 2007 but she appreciated the "good design" of the house.
(Her husband was Alan Brownlie, founder of Skaneateles' Brownlie Design, so she has experience in what she is talking about.)
She says the Lustron is "very accessible" and extremely easy to clean and maintain.
The home makes good and efficient use of its relatively small space with built-in storage, shelving, and closets so that it never "feels cramped."
The open concept allows for "great flow" between the spacious front living room into the dining room and galley-style kitchen.
"It is very easy to use and clean," she says, "and has virtually no dust."
Solidly built, the Lustron easily stands up to whatever weather Central New York has to offer.
"I've never been cold there," Brownlie said, adding that it is "surprisingly cool" in the summer.
She calls the property's private, fenced-in backyard, with its trees, garden, and man-made pond with fountain, her "sanctuary."
Her dozen or so years living in the Lustron has "pleased me to no end," she said, but admits that the time has to come to sell.
Brownlie says the house would be great for a young person just starting out or an empty-nester.
Or anyone interested in owning an authentic piece of American history.

J.C. Penney on Tuesday announced it launched a new home brand, Linden Street.
The brand includes bedding and sheet products ranging between $40 and $220, according to a company press release.
The retailer said it had sustainability in mind when launching the brand, which includes products that are free of more than 300 harmful substances, and feature packaging made with biodegradable labels and recycled polyester.
Dive Insight:
Just days after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, J.C. Penney introduced a new collection aimed at bringing "a fresh beginning" to its home private labels, and possibly the retailer itself.
Although launching a new brand while in the bankruptcy process may come as a surprise, part of the retailer's restructuring plan included "offering compelling merchandise." Similarly, Toys R Us in 2017 launched a rebranding campaign and formed a new partnership with marketplace platform Mirakl just days after it filed for Chapter 11. However, the move cost the struggling toy retailer in the long run and Toys R Us eventually ended up liquidating.
The home space is also a sector J.C. Penney had been moving away from in recent years. When then-CEO Marvin Ellison took the helm in 2016, he made a big push to return appliances and furniture to the retailer's stores after it discontinued sales of non-apparel items back in 1983. The move paid off for a while, but in November 2018, Penney executives said that underperforming categories in the third quarter included "big ticket areas and home such as appliances." In February 2019, the retailer announced it would pull appliances and furniture items from its U.S. stores.
The home category is also a sector that has seen increased competition from off-pricers and e-commerce retailers, battering the more traditional players. Pier 1, which filed for bankruptcy protection in February and last week announced it would wind down its U.S. retail operations, had ceded market share to the likes of Wayfair, Amazon and TJX's HomeGoods. Regional chain Art Van furniture also filed for bankruptcy in March, and discount home goods retailer Tuesday Morning is reportedly eyeing a filing as early as this week.
Though, with the sustainability element to the collection, Penney may be trying to attract a younger set of consumers, who tend to favor more environmentally conscious brands.

Home Depot Memorial Day Sales 2020 - I FOUND A FEW HIDDEN GEMS!
In the coronavirus era, stuck-at-home Americans are loading up on more than just breadmakers. Take Mr Peter Camardella, the 63-year-old owner of a small appliance store in New York. He could not find a deep freezer for his own daughter after his shop sold out.
"Customers have bought one, and they already have two or three. Many buyers are afraid of food shortages," he said.
Even as personal spending in the US plunged the most on record amid stay-at-home orders, people bought all kinds of appliances. Sales from March 15 to April 11 rose for about 70 per cent of the 88 subcategories for home and kitchen goods tracked by market researcher NPD Group.
Some of the gains were just staggering, including electric pasta makers (462 per cent), soft-drink machines (283 per cent), handheld cleaning devices (284 per cent), water filtration machines (152 per cent) and air purifiers (144 per cent).
The much-written-about baking trend also showed up, with purchases of those breadmakers surging more than sixfold.
Lockdown life has forced people to rethink their homes, as they have morphed into spaces where schooling, working, exercising, inventory-stockpiling and germ avoidance are new, high-stakes activities. If history is a guide, that will not change when the world returns to some semblance of normal, according to Mr Ian Bell, a researcher with Euromonitor International.
He noted that people will not fall back into a "psychology of abundance" once the crisis passed. That portends a major shift towards appliances, including adding more space for refrigeration and food storage.
"It won't be business as usual," he said. The phenomenon is global, with regional differences. In countries where people ate out a lot, like Singapore, there are now more pots and pans to clean, thus new interest in dishwashers.
In places where domestic help was common, such as Brazil, the practice has ended due to social distancing, leading to a boom in cleaning devices.
"People are using their appliances more than ever."
The appliance industry is poised to respond because wellness-certified designs and high-tech features, such as voice activation, were already in the innovation pipeline, said Seattle-based kitchen and bath designer Paula Kennedy. "It's amazing, some of the sci-fi things they come up with," she said.
Washing machines with sanitising cycles and Samsung's touchscreen refrigerators are primed to go mainstream more quickly with the added attention on home hygiene in the coronavirus era.
For consumers stockpiling food, a fridge or freezer will be able to alert them when items are about to expire or need to be reordered, Ms Kennedy said.
There are also bathroom exhaust fans equipped with germ-killing LED lights from Wisconsin-based Broan-NuTone.
Consumers can reduce the use of towels, which can spread germs, with hand dryers from UK-based Dyson, or full-body models from Spain's Valiryo Technologies. Even motion-triggered faucets, so hard to turn on in public restrooms, may find traction in the new multi-functional, post-pandemic home.
"If we listen to consumers, there's a whole lot of new need being created," said Mr Joe Derochowski, a home industry analyst at NPD. "This is when stress creates great innovation."
Even big-ticket items are selling amid surging unemployment.
In March, sales in the large-appliance category, which includes washers, ovens and fridges, rose almost 6 per cent from a year ago, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM).
That bucked declines in January and February.
One reason for the gains is that due to social distancing, people are shunning appliance repairs - something they would normally do to save money in an economic downturn.
That has pushed more people to splurge on new dishwashers and refrigerators, according to Ms Jill Notini, a spokesman for the AHAM.
Deep freezers have done especially well, with sales up 45 per cent versus a year ago, according to AHAM data. Most models at the websites of Home Depot and Amazon.com were sold out at the time of writing this story.
The trend appears far from over. Fears over meat shortages spurred another surge in freezer storage, according to Ms Whitney Welch, a spokesman for GE Appliances.
The company, a unit of Qingdao-based Haier Group since 2017, continues to see higher demand. "People are using their appliances more than ever," she said. "They are spending more time with their families under one roof cooking, cleaning and storing food."
For Mr Camardella, the shop owner who sold about 40 deep freezers before running out, there is no relief in sight. He has tried to place orders through a buyer's cooperative only to have delivery dates pushed back.
But he said that has not stopped his customers from pulling out their wallets. "People have been buying refrigerator-freezer combos just to get the freezer."

The Real Reason People Are Buying A Bunch Of Toilet Paper
A group of Turkish business associations is looking to buy the household appliances operations of Dutch health care equipment maker Philips, Turkish newspaper Sabah reported Friday.
Philips said in January it was looking to separate the household appliances arm, which makes vacuum cleaners and coffee machines and had $2.6 billion in sales in 2019.
Spokesman Steve Klink said the company is still in the process of disentangling the operations, a process expected to take 12-18 months.
"We would only expect to engage... (with potential buyers) after the summer," he said.
The Turkish group includes five leading organizations in the business world: The Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEİK), exporters' assembly TİM, the chambers and commodity exchanges union (TOBB) and business associations TUSİAD and MUSİAD.
"We as Turkey are the most powerful country in production between Germany and China. Hence an economic model must be created by the Turkish business world forming consortiums and buying global brands," said DEİK board member Murat Kolbaşı.
Turkey has a $1 billion small household appliances market while there are 10,300 small household appliances brands in the world market which are worth $100 billion.
Kolbaşı said that among those, Philips's home appliances arm is the largest with a 2.3 billion euro ($2.5 billion) turnover.
Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan had expressed support for the project, as well.

Technology has, in one way or another, become one of the driving forces in just about every aspect of our lives. From communication to cooking, as the saying goes, "There's an app (or device) for that." Specifically in the kitchen, however, gadgets are nothing new. However, the introduction of Brava, adoringly dubbed the "Easy-Bake oven for grown-ups," has the sauce that shoppers say is both "game-changing" and "life-changing."
Credit: Brava
While there are seemingly countless countertop appliances on the market that boast signature tech features like the ever-popular Instant Pot and the slew of air fryers available at our fingertips, none seem to boast the elegance and targeted execution of the Brava.
So what exactly makes this appliance so special? Firstly, unlike conventional ovens and heat-powered appliances, it uses light only throughout the entire cooking process.
According to the product's description, this particular technique "allows Brava to achieve a blend of speed and consistency." With lamps located all throughout the device's interior, the Brava "can roast vegetables in half the time, poach eggs with ease, and sear steaks without overcooking them." Also, all throughout this robust cooking time, the outside of the device remains completely cool to the touch.
Credit: Brava
The cooking process also couldn't be simpler thanks to the guided prompts and instructions showcased on the touchscreen, which is located at the top of the device.
Here's how it works: Eliminating the need to stand over a stove or grill or constantly having the need to flip any proteins, Brava just requires that users prepare the ingredients. Once seasoned to your liking, place the ingredients on the suggested tray (included in the purchase), and slide them into the device. Now for the fun part: Follow the prompts, and let Brava work its magic — It's that easy!
Story continues
Also, users can cook up to three courses at once with this device, and, thanks to its internal cameras, the cooking process can be monitored from the screen or via the Brava app which also alerts you when your food is done.
On days when you're also not sure of what to prepare, Brava's built-in recipe guide features hundreds of full meal recipes (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, desserts and more) and directions to get you started.
Credit: Brava
Proving that this kitchen gadget is arguably the only powerhouse your kitchen needs, Brava can sear, toast, bake, dehydrate, air fry, reheat and keep food warm. To give you an idea of its power and precision, this appliance can even roast an entire whole chicken in just 30 minutes!
So, what are shoppers' honest opinions of this one-of-a-kind kitchen gadget? According to one five-star reviewer, it's hands down, the "best appliance ever!"
"It took my mom a lot to convince me to get to buy the Brava. Mostly because I did not believe that something that good existed!" the shopper wrote. "It was love at first sight! it is sooooo easy and the meals come out just perfect. Love it!"
A second shopper dubbed it a "game-changing, life-changing oven" before gushing that it "has solved all of my problems when it comes to cooking and eating well."
"It has never been easier, faster, and simpler for me to make any food or meal of choice!" the shopper added. "I can make a full tray of butternut squash in 12 minutes, start to finish! I can make incredible seared salmon in 5 minutes and 30 seconds!"
Credit: Brava
A New York Times review of the Brava also sang its praises, dubbing it the next best kitchen invention to take over.
"The microwave oven did not revolutionize home cooking," author Florence Fabricant wrote. "Nor did sous-vide gadgetry. Now there's a new contender: the Brava Oven."
The folks at Brava have offered In The Know readers an exclusive $200-off discount on any of the three models(Starter Kit, Bake & Breakfast or Chef's Choice). Simply click on this link and a banner indicating that the discount is applied will appear at the top of your screen.
It should be noted that the only difference among these three options is the included number of extra cookware pieces and pans — each package comes with the appliance as well as a two-year Brava Plus Membership.
This complimentary membership is described as "the cloud service" that brings Brava chefs "into your kitchen." Through this program, premium recipes, cook modes and more are added to your Brava via an automatic software update that's pushed to the device every week via WiFi. The latest update (May 20) included a new slow cooker function, adding to the slew of features currently available for the device.
Brava's certainly the future of cooking. Take advantage of the exclusive offer, above. It expires on May 25 at 12:00 p.m. PST.

Even as the coronavirus pandemic has devastated much of the retail industry, some of the nation's largest chains are thriving as customers stock up on groceries, home appliances and other essentials at unprecedented rates.
Retail giants Walmart and Home Depot on Tuesday reported big boosts in quarterly sales, propped up by panic-buying as Americans hunkered down at home.
Walmart said online sales surged 74 percent, lifting overall sales by nearly 9 percent from February to April.
Home Depot said its revenue rose 7 percent.
On the other side of the spectrum is Kohl's. The department store chain, whose stores have been closed in recent weeks, posted a 41 percent drop in revenue for the quarter, offering a stark reminder of how the pandemic is boosting some retailers while hurting others.
Consumer spending has dropped precipitously in the weeks since the pandemic took hold.
U.S. retail sales fell a record 8.3 percent in March, then plunged 16.4 percent in April, according to U.S. Commerce Department data, as Americans stopped spending on clothing, furniture, housewares and other nonessentials.
Retailers temporarily closed more than 260,000 stores because of the coronavirus outbreak, all but bringing business to a halt for many companies that rely on in-store shoppers to drive the bulk of their sales.
Four major retailers — J. Crew, Neiman Marcus, Stage Stores and J.C. Penney — already have filed for bankruptcy this month, and analysts say they expect others to follow as more companies run out of cash and the economy continues to sour.

Pier 1, which had filed for bankruptcy weeks before the shutdowns, announced Tuesday it would cease operations altogether. It had planned to closed 450 of its 936 stores and shed 40 percent of its workforce and find a buyer, but the pandemic ended those hopes.
"It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. The bigger, stronger players are taking even more market share," said Mickey Chadha, senior credit officer at rating agency Moody's.
"And the companies that were weak to begin with, they are only going to become weaker."

Following the Covid-19 outbreak, Cuckoo International has started a corporate social responsibility awareness and educational campaign called Cuckoo Cares.
Through the campaign, the company has been actively extending its support to the government and Malaysians to help combat the pandemic.
Cuckoo International equipped Covid-19 quarantine centres at MAEPS Serdang and Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex with water purifiers and air purifiers worth more than RM200,000.
The home appliance brand has launched a series of Beyond Standards products and service to customers – the P10 multicooker, WonderDewi masks and WonderKlean disinfection service.
The products and service are in line with the company's vision to provide Malaysians a one-stop healthy home solution through Cuckoo's Healthy Home platform.
"We hope to increase the quality of living by making the healthy home concept accessible to all through our Cuckoo Healthy Home platform," said Cuckoo International founder and chief executive officer Hoe Kian Choon.
The different aspects of what makes a healthy home are categorised into four "pillars" under
its platform.
Each pillar features its own products or services. While the fourth pillar has yet to be launched, the three pillars are healthy appliances, healthy lifestyle and healthy home care.
Starting from water purifiers, Cuckoo houses a range of appliances, including air purifiers, multicookers, outdoor filter, induction hobs and kitchenware.
Healthy lifestyle focuses on beauty care and lifestyle. Leading the pillar is WonderLab, a skincare retailer featuring a range of skincare brands – Haruharu, Well Nature and WonderDewi.
Healthy home care focuses on delivering Beyond Standards services to customers. Through this pillar, Cuckoo International introduced the WonderKlean brand that provides indoor disinfection services with its specialised Cuckoo Healthy Home service team.
The P10 multicooker features nine cooking modes – white rice, turbo white rice, sushi rice, Gaba rice, porridge, multicook, baby food, bread ferment and oven.
Through the extensive and diverse cooking modes, consumers can prepare a variety of food, from as simple as cooking porridge to baking.
Most notably, the patented "MY Mode" technology gives users the flexibility of choosing their rice texture between normal and glutinous.
The multicooker can cook up to 10 cups of rice (1.8 litre). With its smart algorithm, Cuckoo technology ensures energy efficiency during the cooking process. The product is also durable with the X-Wall Diamond coating that can withstand high pressure and heat.
Meanwhile, the WonderDewi masks by WonderLab can improve and maintain healthy, hydrated and dewy skin. The masks feature four different types of sheet masks, each infused with natural extracts to nourish and care for different skin types.
With a gentle formula and tested by dermatologists, the masks are safe for daily use and aid in improving skin conditions.
WonderKlean disinfectant tablets are also safe and harmless to adults, children and pets. It is alcohol-free and non-flammable, odourless, has no irritant and non-corrosive (pH5-6).
The disinfection service is available via the WonderKlean website or at any Cuckoo E-Brandstores that also offer various other products.

These disinfection services are done by a professional Cuckoo Healthy Home service team.

Generators
1. Honda EU2200i Inverter Generator
generator (Photo: Honda)
If you're shopping for a portable generator, the Honda EU2200i is arguably one of the best you can buy for short-term usage, like during a camping trip or if you want a basic backup power source. Right now, you can buy it for $1,049 at Home Depot. Though it's not marked as being on sale, it's actually $100 less than its usual cost of $1,149. That $1,049 price tag is also about $65 cheaper than what this top-rated inverter generator is going for online at other retailers. Specifically, this model is an inverter generator, which is an innovation on conventional portable models that draws power from a direct-current (DC) source, like a car battery, and then converts it into alternating current (AC) electricity. This type of portable generator has a reputation for being quieter than an ordinary one (although you'll want to note that this is different from a standby generator, which is larger and needs to be installed). These types are also known to run for longer periods of time—the Honda EU2200i, for instance, can be operated for up to six hours, even when the 0.95-gallon fuel tank is running on a 50 percent load. With a full tank, it can last for up to eight hours.
One of the other major advantages of this 2,200-watt inverter generator is that it's safe to use on everyday devices, like laptops and smartphones, so it'll especially come in handy if you need it during an emergency. While you should definitely exercise caution when you're using a portable generator and only use them outdoors in widely ventilated areas, it can be a great investment.
