Sales soaring at Walmart Home Depot; Pier 1 to cease operations

Even as the coronavirus pandemic has devastated much of the retail industry, some of the nation's largest chains are thriving as customers stock up on groceries, home appliances and other essentials at unprecedented rates.

Retail giants Walmart and Home Depot on Tuesday reported big boosts in quarterly sales, propped up by panic-buying as Americans hunkered down at home.

Walmart said online sales surged 74 percent, lifting overall sales by nearly 9 percent from February to April.

Home Depot said its revenue rose 7 percent.

On the other side of the spectrum is Kohl's. The department store chain, whose stores have been closed in recent weeks, posted a 41 percent drop in revenue for the quarter, offering a stark reminder of how the pandemic is boosting some retailers while hurting others.

Consumer spending has dropped precipitously in the weeks since the pandemic took hold.

U.S. retail sales fell a record 8.3 percent in March, then plunged 16.4 percent in April, according to U.S. Commerce Department data, as Americans stopped spending on clothing, furniture, housewares and other nonessentials.

Retailers temporarily closed more than 260,000 stores because of the coronavirus outbreak, all but bringing business to a halt for many companies that rely on in-store shoppers to drive the bulk of their sales.

Four major retailers — J. Crew, Neiman Marcus, Stage Stores and J.C. Penney — already have filed for bankruptcy this month, and analysts say they expect others to follow as more companies run out of cash and the economy continues to sour.

Pier 1, which had filed for bankruptcy weeks before the shutdowns, announced Tuesday it would cease operations altogether. It had planned to closed 450 of its 936 stores and shed 40 percent of its workforce and find a buyer, but the pandemic ended those hopes.

"It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. The bigger, stronger players are taking even more market share," said Mickey Chadha, senior credit officer at rating agency Moody's.

"And the companies that were weak to begin with, they are only going to become weaker."

Making healthy home living accessible

Following the Covid-19 outbreak, Cuckoo International has started a corporate social responsibility awareness and educational campaign called Cuckoo Cares.

Through the campaign, the company has been actively extending its support to the government and Malaysians to help combat the pandemic.

Cuckoo International equipped Covid-19 quarantine centres at MAEPS Serdang and Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex with water purifiers and air purifiers worth more than RM200,000.

The home appliance brand has launched a series of Beyond Standards products and service to customers – the P10 multicooker, WonderDewi masks and WonderKlean disinfection service.

The products and service are in line with the company's vision to provide Malaysians a one-stop healthy home solution through Cuckoo's Healthy Home platform.

"We hope to increase the quality of living by making the healthy home concept accessible to all through our Cuckoo Healthy Home platform," said Cuckoo International founder and chief executive officer Hoe Kian Choon.

The different aspects of what makes a healthy home are categorised into four "pillars" under

its platform.

Each pillar features its own products or services. While the fourth pillar has yet to be launched, the three pillars are healthy appliances, healthy lifestyle and healthy home care.

Starting from water purifiers, Cuckoo houses a range of appliances, including air purifiers, multicookers, outdoor filter, induction hobs and kitchenware.

Healthy lifestyle focuses on beauty care and lifestyle. Leading the pillar is WonderLab, a skincare retailer featuring a range of skincare brands – Haruharu, Well Nature and WonderDewi.

Healthy home care focuses on delivering Beyond Standards services to customers. Through this pillar, Cuckoo International introduced the WonderKlean brand that provides indoor disinfection services with its specialised Cuckoo Healthy Home service team.

The P10 multicooker features nine cooking modes – white rice, turbo white rice, sushi rice, Gaba rice, porridge, multicook, baby food, bread ferment and oven.

Through the extensive and diverse cooking modes, consumers can prepare a variety of food, from as simple as cooking porridge to baking.

Most notably, the patented "MY Mode" technology gives users the flexibility of choosing their rice texture between normal and glutinous.

The multicooker can cook up to 10 cups of rice (1.8 litre). With its smart algorithm, Cuckoo technology ensures energy efficiency during the cooking process. The product is also durable with the X-Wall Diamond coating that can withstand high pressure and heat.

Meanwhile, the WonderDewi masks by WonderLab can improve and maintain healthy, hydrated and dewy skin. The masks feature four different types of sheet masks, each infused with natural extracts to nourish and care for different skin types.

With a gentle formula and tested by dermatologists, the masks are safe for daily use and aid in improving skin conditions.

WonderKlean disinfectant tablets are also safe and harmless to adults, children and pets. It is alcohol-free and non-flammable, odourless, has no irritant and non-corrosive (pH5-6).

The disinfection service is available via the WonderKlean website or at any Cuckoo E-Brandstores that also offer various other products.

The standard package contains one disinfectant tablet which is able to disinfect an area of up to 1,500sq ft while the superior package comes with three disinfectant tablets to disinfect an area of up to 4,500sq ft.

These disinfection services are done by a professional Cuckoo Healthy Home service team.

Cuckoo International is offering a one-time free disinfection service to be conducted during customers' Natural Care Service session from June to September 2020.

In addition, Cuckoo customers will receive exclusive customer specials, redeemable via any Cuckoo E-Brandstores.

Generators

1. Honda EU2200i Inverter Generator

If you're shopping for a portable generator, the Honda EU2200i is arguably one of the best you can buy for short-term usage, like during a camping trip or if you want a basic backup power source. Right now, you can buy it for $1,049 at Home Depot. Though it's not marked as being on sale, it's actually $100 less than its usual cost of $1,149. That $1,049 price tag is also about $65 cheaper than what this top-rated inverter generator is going for online at other retailers. Specifically, this model is an inverter generator, which is an innovation on conventional portable models that draws power from a direct-current (DC) source, like a car battery, and then converts it into alternating current (AC) electricity. This type of portable generator has a reputation for being quieter than an ordinary one (although you'll want to note that this is different from a standby generator, which is larger and needs to be installed). These types are also known to run for longer periods of time—the Honda EU2200i, for instance, can be operated for up to six hours, even when the 0.95-gallon fuel tank is running on a 50 percent load. With a full tank, it can last for up to eight hours.

One of the other major advantages of this 2,200-watt inverter generator is that it's safe to use on everyday devices, like laptops and smartphones, so it'll especially come in handy if you need it during an emergency. While you should definitely exercise caution when you're using a portable generator and only use them outdoors in widely ventilated areas, it can be a great investment.

For most people, Dyson needs no introduction. As the gold standard of home appliances, Dyson is known for its intuitive, game-changing technology and sleek designs. Naturally, its cordless vacuums do not disappoint.

Compatible with a range of different surfaces, Dyson's vacuums boasts a powerful suction to eliminate dust, dirt, and debris. Since these models don't have any superfluous cables, you can seamlessly glide from room to room. And, if you need to clean any nook and crannies, some models can be converted into a handheld vacuum. While Dyson's vacuums are some of the best the market has to offer, they're not what we'd call cheap. Fortunately, this sale offers a rare opportunity to buy a great vacuum for less.

The only question that remains: Which one should you buy? If you're looking for the bells and whistles of a new model, you can save $100 on Dyson's V11 Torque Drive and V11 Animal, both of which are tricked out with the latest technology. Or, if you're on the hunt for a great deal, you can score the Cyclone V10 and the Cyclone V10 Animal for under $400.

But no matter which option you choose, one thing's for sure: This is one sale you don't want to miss.

How COVID-19 Appliance Stockpiling Is Benefiting Whirlpool Lowe's Others

As a side effect of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, home appliance manufacturers such as Whirlpool (NYSE:WHR) and retailers like Lowe's (NYSE:LOW) or Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) may profit from a new trend in purchases as people stock up on the freezers needed to store extra food during and after the outbreak.

According to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, or AHAM, pandemic buying has boosted deep freezer sales by approximately 45% year over year during the first quarter. Anecdotal evidence from appliance store owners supports the figures. As The Spokesman-Review reports, Ryan Holzapple, a manager at Fred's Appliances in the Spokane, Washington area, says about freezers, "We usually sell about 200 a month. In March, we sold 800."

Another appliance store owner near the opposite coast, Paul Syktich in DuBois, Pennsylvania, told the Courier Express that both chest and upright freezers are selling out as rapidly as they arrive at his store, remarking, "Everybody's stockpiling meat and they are figuring out they need a bigger freezer."

According to research by the NPD Group, COVID-19 ignited massive demand increases for other appliances besides freezers between March 15 and April 28:

Appliance Growth (YOY) Air purifiers 144% Water filtration equipment 152% Soda machines 283% Cleaning devices 284% Bread makers 400% (approx.) Electric pasta makers 462%

Data source: NPD Group. YOY= Year-over-year.

The NPD Group also notes over 80% of American households currently have baking materials like flour, butter, eggs, and milk stockpiled, driving demand for appliances to turn these ingredients into finished foods as people eat at home to avoid the coronavirus.

During the Whirlpool first-quarter earnings call, CFO Jim Peters noted that its sales product mix shifted in the direction of large appliances due to "selling more freezers, microwaves and lower-end refrigerators."
